Duplicates

Find duplicates – and keep the right copy.

Tern Files finds files with exactly the same content, even under different names, and moves the extra copies to the Recycle Bin. One copy always stays. Duplicates is a Pro feature: 14 days free, then buy once.

Duplicate files in Tern Files with a keep rule

Same content, any name

Open Storage & duplicates in the sidebar and switch to Duplicates. The search starts by itself across All drives; at the top right you can pick a single drive instead.

Tern Files compares the sizes first, then a checksum of the start and end of each file, and finally the full content – so only real copies end up in a group. Files under 1 KB, system folders and files that are only online are left out. The groups are sorted by how much space they save.

A rule decides which copy stays

Each copy shows Location, Modified and Last opened and is marked Keep or Remove; a click switches the mark. Keep automatically sets the marks for you, by one of these rules:

  • File in the most important place (Documents › Pictures › Downloads)
  • Oldest or Newest
  • Shortest path

Whatever you choose, one copy of each group is always kept.

Delete safely

Move to Recycle Bin moves the marked copies to the Recycle Bin. The step is in the history and can be undone; the space is freed once you empty the Recycle Bin. Replace with hard links is the alternative for copies on the same drive: they become one shared file and the space is freed at once – but this step can't be undone in the history.

Include similar photos also finds resized or slightly changed photos. They are never marked for removal. See Duplicates.
